The name is military inspired. Elvin E. Thomas, grandfather of P-51 Flag Football founder Darin Thomas, was a Staff Sergeant in the 332nd Fighter Group, also known as the Tuskegee Airmen. The Tuskegee Airmen were the first all African American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. In WWII they made their mark on history by successfully taking over the duty of escorting bombers to enemy territory, and never losing a single mission. Their undefeated combat record quickly commanded world-wide respect.
They earned the nickname, "Red Tails," because the planes they flew had a recognizable red tail fin. Those planes were the iconic P-51 Mustangs or just simply the P-51's. This high speed, long-range fighter was armed with six .50 cal M2 Browning machine guns. The P-51 dominated air combat in Europe, destroying nearly 5,000 enemy aircraft. It could carry 1,000 pounds of bombs and rockets making it the ideal fighter for the job!
There couldn't be a better name to describe our movement and our team! We aim to embody the fighter spirit! To carry and unleash more than it appears we are capable of. We will never fail a mission only learn from mistakes in battle. The "P" in P-51 stands for "Pursuit." We will stay in constant pursuit of becoming the best versions of ourselves. We will let our performance speak for us. Lastly, the Tuskegee Airmen wore a patch that read, "SPIT FIRE." It had a stitched fire breathing panther as the insignia serving as a reminder to the pilots of their aggressive tenacity to protect allied bombers and the flaming destruction of enemy fighters. We will be fierce and compete with a burning desire to succeed!
